@MaggioMatt My point is that almost all cities that aren't in the Sunbelt lost population at a time when NYC's grew 18 percent between 1990-2018. The out-immigration of middle-class families with children has been a NYC constant since the late 1940s. But they are replaced by 25-year-olds. — PolitiTweet.org

@joelmsiegel Since the author of the article identifies herself as a "libertarian writer," you would indeed assume that she believed in the free market as an index of demand. — PolitiTweet.org
Walter Shapiro @MrWalterShapiro
@MaggioMatt Article claims the city is losing 98,000 people a year. (I haven't checked these figures). That works out to 1.1 percent per year. If things continue at this rate, it will take until 2032 for NYC to get back to its 1990 population. In 30 years, Chicago population has been static. — PolitiTweet.org
Walter Shapiro @MrWalterShapiro
@ProfCiara Totally understand that point about rents. But the article in the Hill never mentioned rents. It was disproportionately focused on taxes and (believe it or not) crime. — PolitiTweet.org
Walter Shapiro @MrWalterShapiro
Maybe the answer is that NYC is bigger than anywhere else and the out-migration as a percentage is much smaller than it seems. Also, NYC gained 1.3 million people since 1990 so there are the inevitable effects of over-crowding. Strong hunch -- it's not taxes. — PolitiTweet.org

In a wonderful holiday column, @JillDLawrence does a time travel trip back to what Valerie Harper's "Rhoda" represented for working women in the 1970s. And it includes an amazing 1975 letter to Jill from a top producer on "Rhoda." https://t.co/t2pA6piCEv — PolitiTweet.org

@cpogash Please understand that my tweet was meant to be cheerful rather than snarky. And all of us have Twitter habits that date back to the days of 140 characters. I know I went through a long period when I dropped articles like "an" to save characters. Also, it is a great Times piece. — PolitiTweet.org

@MitziVictorius @tomwatson Sorry, in my haste, I misread NV for NH. — PolitiTweet.org
Walter Shapiro @MrWalterShapiro
@tomwatson Serious question without NH, who would the Democrats have nominated in 1984, 1988, 2000, 2004 and 2016 who would have done better? And, more important, how would four regional mid-sized states helped nominate these mythical candidates? — PolitiTweet.org
Walter Shapiro @MrWalterShapiro
@tomwatson Too big. The logic is to keep campaign costs down for insurgent candidates by making the first four states comparatively small. Boston media is a killer for unfounded candidates. — PolitiTweet.org
Walter Shapiro @MrWalterShapiro
@tomwatson Find a better small Eastern state than NH. Vermont is whiter and much more rural. RI is notoriously corrupt. CT requires you to buy the NY media market. Delaware is more in the shadow of Philadelphia than NH is to Boston. — PolitiTweet.org
Walter Shapiro @MrWalterShapiro
@MitziVictorius @tomwatson NH has a primary not a caucus. — PolitiTweet.org
Walter Shapiro @MrWalterShapiro
Problem is that state blocs that primary on the same day would drastically inflate the cost of campaigning in the early states. Even with Boston media, NH is comparatively cheap. — PolitiTweet.org

@tomwatson DNC should have banned caucuses. But don’t blame NH. It has always been a primary where independents can choose their party. — PolitiTweet.org

@ExportedFromMI That's why SC is one of the early states. The Democratic primary electorate is between 55-60 percent African American. — PolitiTweet.org

Why? NH does a great job of hosting candidates, weighing candidates and boasts a primary turnout rate higher that some states in November. And what’s wrong with tradition? — PolitiTweet.org

While handicapping the Iowa caucus rules change is difficult, my early hunch is that eliminating the virtual caucuses and absentee voting would benefit candidates who organized early like Elizabeth Warren and maybe Beto O'Rourke. https://t.co/7qeBA2DowL — PolitiTweet.org

@greenfield64 Turnout in Iowa is terrible compared to a primary. NH primary turnout is often higher than general election turnout in states like NY. But I think the IA turnout problem is more cold winter nights and long meetings than shy voters. I believe Iowa GOP does have a secret ballot. — PolitiTweet.org
Walter Shapiro @MrWalterShapiro
@digby56 There's a reason why the phrase is "Iowa nice" and not "Nevada nice." Also, I hate caucuses because they exclude people who can't go out on a cold winter night. That said, Iowa Democrats have traditionally done a very good job, in contrast to other remaining caucuses. — PolitiTweet.org
Walter Shapiro @MrWalterShapiro
@NelsonJustinC @digby56 Because NH has earned it over the last 100 years with high turnout and a strong sense of civic obligation to assess the candidates seriously. — PolitiTweet.org
Walter Shapiro @MrWalterShapiro
@digby56 Three quick points: 1). Iowa remains a caucus only because NH rightfully insists on being first primary. 2). Every Iowa caucus I've attended in the last 30 years has been a cheerful event with no one intimidated at all. 3). Equitable solution is for Iowa to become 2nd primary. — PolitiTweet.org
