@adam_polak_ @Jon4Lakers this is more or less a DIY solution. native integration with homekit means i don’t have to rely on their servers. — PolitiTweet.org

@mdrndad @Jon4Lakers native homekit integration hopefully means i won’t have to rely on a flaky cloud service, but we’ll see. the meross smart plug i own has been great so far. — PolitiTweet.org

@adam_polak_ @Jon4Lakers yeah that’s what i’m currently doing. but because myQ is such a trash platform, the plugin breaks all the time (it was just down for about a week straight until the dev could fix it). not the dev’s fault, but it is what it is. — PolitiTweet.org

@Jon4Lakers it’s the meross opener. to be clear, i’m not replacing my garage door opener, it’s still a Liftmaster. i’m just bypassing using the garbage myQ service to control it. — PolitiTweet.org

@Ohthatflo yes and no. i have the native myQ hub that makes it connected. but this controller bypasses all of that. — PolitiTweet.org

@b3ll i bought this so i wouldn’t have to continue relying on the myQ homebridge plugin that breaks every other week due to myQ’s shittiness. — PolitiTweet.org

none of this would be necessary if myQ wasn't such a garbage platform that either didn't work with anything or milks you to buy more hardware for basic HomeKit support. this controller gives me HomeKit, Alexa, Assistant, and SmartThings support. hence my big old 🖕 to it all. — PolitiTweet.org

you email them the model of door opener you have after you buy the controller and they ship the remote to you and you can finish the install. the ironic part is because you don't have to wire the controller into the door opener, the install process is actually much easier — PolitiTweet.org

so this company's solution is to send you a wireless remote, like you might clip to your car's sunvisor, that you wire to the controller. you program the remote to your door like any other, and then this controller "pushes" the button when you use the app or a voice command — PolitiTweet.org

some more deets on the “adapter” because i just find it hilarious: Chamberlain/Liftmaster's myQ platform is so closed and crappy that almost nothing works with it. you can't just wire one of these controllers in to the opener like you can with most other door openers — PolitiTweet.org

@capn_scrims i’ll report back once i get it installed. the adapter to make my Liftmaster work with this (which is literally just a wireless remote that you connect this to) is coming from China so it might be a bit — PolitiTweet.org

@wttdavid yes, smart switches are the alternative. but they don’t have all of the features of smart bulbs (adjustable color, individual dimming, etc) so there are tradeoffs either way. depends on what you want. — PolitiTweet.org
