@gruber It is super disappointing that Apple didn’t put any work into these apps. iOS apps on the Mac are starting to feel like a pretty sweet solution. I wanted Apple to go hard and show developers the right way to do these. This is not that. — PolitiTweet.org

@RonAmadeo For all practical purposes, it's a Google Chat Service. Difference will be that it's willing to let carriers take over providing it if they so choose. — PolitiTweet.org

That's it for now, but there are a lot of neat technical details in the full story. EG. There's no central database of RCS users ala iMessage, it's all point driven by the Android Messages app: https://t.co/v9ZMoMJ1Oz — PolitiTweet.org

Anyway, it is all very interesting and I'm annoyed that we still have to wait for the rollout to finish, and again, there's no timeline for US customers. But now instead of pestering AT&T or Verizon or whoever, you can pester just one company: Google. — PolitiTweet.org

Google will only keep contents of messages until they're delivered. Also committed to keeping metadata on its servers temporary. Still: end-to-end encryption would be better. — PolitiTweet.org

I imagine Google will have lots of arguments to say that it's not a problem for it to offer RCS services to everybody. 1. Opt-in. 2. It's just implementing the GSMA spec. 3. It tried very hard to get carriers to do it themselves. 4. It will let any carrier take over RCS. — PolitiTweet.org

Android is 75% of the global smartphone market, and all of those phones (minus China) will soon have a default messaging option through Google. It's opt-in, but that still could make regulators sit up and take notice. — PolitiTweet.org

Carriers will still be able to provide RCS services to Android users directly. If they want to, Google will step back and let them. That could get messy, but we'll see. But Google seems to be taking a stronger, more opinionated stance on getting RCS rolled out — PolitiTweet.org

Apple, of course, has not said whether or not it will ever support RCS on the iPhone. Google hasn't said what countries it'll light up for RCS next, nor given a timeline for when it will finish rolling it out — PolitiTweet.org

Google also clearly working on adding end-to-end encryption to RCS: "We fundamentally believe that communication, especially messaging, is highly personal and users have a right to privacy for their communications. And we’re fully committed to finding a solution for our users." — PolitiTweet.org

This is a very big deal for many reasons. Google is finally directly offering a good DEFAULT messaging experience to Android users, for one thing. It's not rolling out worldwide right away, but it's finally happening and users don't have to wait for carriers to get it. — PolitiTweet.org

Big Android news: Google is finally taking charge of the RCS rollout. Instead of waiting for carriers, it's going to provide those services directly to any Android user. Starting in UK and France, more countries to come. Full story here (plus a thread): https://t.co/v9ZMoMJ1Oz — PolitiTweet.org
