I still think it's a good idea to delete them regardless. 1) Probably Twitter does actually delete deleted DMs eventually 2) If your account is hacked (maybe even if it's subpoenaed) it won't have those DMs anymore 3) Why store chats forever? — PolitiTweet.org

When you delete DMs, you delete them for YOU, but the recipient will still have them in their account. If you BOTH delete them, no one (but Twitter) knows if Twitter still retains your deleted DMs or for how long — PolitiTweet.org
