@jondevaan The kind of basic, everyday statistics I’m advocating for in no way requires calculus. — PolitiTweet.org
Walt Mossberg @waltmossberg
Making basic statistics and finance mandatory in high school, and trig and calculus electives, would help consumers battle predatory financial institutions and lying politicians and interest groups. It would also increase news literacy and critical thinking. It just makes sense. — PolitiTweet.org

@Taytus Oh, I agree 100% on teaching kids critical thinking and how to detect misinformation. That’s why I’m on the board of the News Literacy Project. But an understanding of basic statistics and finance would bolster both of those goals. @NewsLitProject — PolitiTweet.org

I suspect this argument will anger some STEM advocates. But I’m not against STEM. I just think that radically improving American numeracy in everyday life is vital, and trigonometry and calculus don’t do that. — PolitiTweet.org
Walt Mossberg @waltmossberg
I have long believed this. Advanced math (anything past basic algebra and geometry) should be reserved for pupils wanting or needing it. But every kid needs an understanding of statistics, how to decipher numerical trends, and basic finance. And, FYI, I got an A in trigonometry. — PolitiTweet.org

Early morning hot take: We would be a lot better off if we taught teenagers basic statistics and causal inference instead of trigonometry

@HistoricalGamer @strategywargamr The facts are against you on this. Apple (along with Commodore and Radio Shack) *did* indeed invent the mass market personal computer (with the Apple II) in 1977. Before that year, there was nothing we could recognize as a personal computer for mainstream consumers. — PolitiTweet.org

@MarkVenaTechGuy Mark, I see the link between Presario and Windows 95. But consumer tech was well established by 1993. It’s why I was able to start a popular column on the topic for non-techies in 1991. The first computers aimed directly at consumers were Apples, Commodores, Radio Shacks. — PolitiTweet.org

2/ It was a giant achievement for @Microsoft and, IMO, it also sealed the fate of the already-stumbling and losing version of Apple after the firing of Steve Jobs. The quality and success of Windows 95 kicked off the chain of events that led to Jobs’s return. — PolitiTweet.org
Walt Mossberg @waltmossberg
1/ With Windows 95, released this day in 1995, Windows finally caught up to, and passed, the Mac OS at the time. My verdict back then: “In most respects, it is the equal of the Macintosh and even includes a few ease-of-use features Apple's machines lack.” https://t.co/otsDXhlHP3 — PolitiTweet.org
