@econ_robinson @Limerick1914 Thoughtful reply coming. Thank you for bringing these to my attention. And I look forward to counting the discussion. Stand by please. NB I am in Dubai and was dictating between meetings and taxis. Pardon the dictation errors. I am now at a keyboard and can be more careful. — PolitiTweet.org

@econ_robinson @Limerick1914 Well, some of these articles arent getting less informative, more argumentative. “I can read your mind and Divine your real intentions, or saying…“ But the articles are still OK. — PolitiTweet.org

@econ_robinson @Limerick1914 Enjoying the first one very much. Thank you. We have much to discuss. — PolitiTweet.org

@econ_robinson TYPOS CORRECTED … let me be clear: there are a huge number of specific cases of Blacks being thieved from, particularly with respect to land rights. It is a horrific story. Any of that which can be tracked down and documented, I am 100% supportive. Started a related firm. — PolitiTweet.org

@econ_robinson A story I told elsewhere in this thread, concerning a flashlight and a wrench. What I am respectfully suggesting is, we are caught up in an argument over the flashlight. But look, I will give you the wrench. I will CONCEDE the wrench. Let me know if you cannot find that story — PolitiTweet.org
Patrick Byrne @PatrickByrne
@econ_robinson Second: if what you are talking about is a more general case for reparations, then that more general case is something like, “everyone who’s ancestors were harmed by slavery gets compensated.” But that then covers the Irish: about were brought here as slaves. Or consider…. — PolitiTweet.org

@econ_robinson First, let me be clear: there are a huge number of specific cases of black being seen, particularly with respect to land rights. It is a horrific story. And any of that which can be tracked down and documented, I really am 100% supportive. — PolitiTweet.org

@Lawrence3134 @econ_robinson Funny. No, I think the practice began when the Cromwell was clearing Ireland. (“To Hell or Connaught!”) I vaguely recall they sent about 300,000 Irish slaves to the colonies. But then it evolved into indentured servitude in the next century. So people emerged or they died within. — PolitiTweet.org
Patrick Byrne @PatrickByrne
@econ_robinson Shouldn’t there just be one principle to govern this? — PolitiTweet.org
Patrick Byrne @PatrickByrne
@econ_robinson You get the keys to a couple of identical jeeps. You will own one the rest of your life, the other, you turn the keys back in 5 years. Which will you treat more harshly? So it was with indentured servants. The idea was for them to end their contract at the point of starvation. — PolitiTweet.org
Patrick Byrne @PatrickByrne
@econ_robinson Actually, I don’t believe that’s correct. I’ll have to go look it up. But as I recall, there WERE 300k Irish slaves in the 1600s. Not indentured servants. Those came later. And while that always sounds like they served tea (“servants”), note my earlier example: — PolitiTweet.org

@Ronmain3 Milton Friedman used to say, "The Left holds itself out as the champion of the poor and underprivileged. Yet on the one issue that could do more than anything to give the underprivileged a chance, school choice, they are on the wrong side." — PolitiTweet.org
Patrick Byrne @PatrickByrne
@Ronmain3 So let us revisit the social safety net. I have a great system to propose some day (too technical right here). And most importantly, choice has to come to education. Give them mom the decision about where that money is spent. — PolitiTweet.org
Patrick Byrne @PatrickByrne
@Ronmain3 But if what we are talking about is revisitng the grand bargain made in the 1960's, I am all for it. I do not buy into #reparations theory for the reasons I have sketched, but I 100% buy into a need to restart that conversation intelligently. A lot has been learned since then. — PolitiTweet.org
Patrick Byrne @PatrickByrne
@Ronmain3 In which case I say, "I am all for it." It is more to the point, and it does not involve redesigning 1,000 years of common law and addressing a host of imponderable questions. So how do we address disparity? Others here noted $14 trillion has been spent, to no evident effect. — PolitiTweet.org
Patrick Byrne @PatrickByrne
@Ronmain3 The motorcyclist realized he was not really looking for the flashlight, he was looking for the wrench. The flashlight was just a way to find the wrench. Similarly, #reparations is just the flashlight. What I think we really are trying to address are the disparities. — PolitiTweet.org
Patrick Byrne @PatrickByrne
@Ronmain3 ...Or recognize that what is really driving this are the disparities around us. In other words, if Blacks had caught the rest of society, would we really be talking about reparations today? I think not. Which shows it really is about disparity. To which I say: 100% true. — PolitiTweet.org
Patrick Byrne @PatrickByrne
@Ronmain3 Because if it is really about reparations, then we have to rebuild jurisprudence regarding torts, figure out how to solve the Angela-Davis-Is-A-Mayflower problem, figure out how to solve the Irish problem, send the bill to the Democratic Party and Mosques, or... — PolitiTweet.org
Patrick Byrne @PatrickByrne
@Ronmain3 That applies here in the following way. #reparations folks should ask themselves: "Are we really fighting for this because we believe in reparations? Or are we fighting for it because of the horrible disparity in economic outcomes and all measures of human flourishing?" — PolitiTweet.org
Patrick Byrne @PatrickByrne
@Ronmain3 Until he remembers he is not looking for the flashlight, he is looking for the wrench, and it is on top of the pile. — PolitiTweet.org
Patrick Byrne @PatrickByrne
@Ronmain3 A motorclists stops for the night, and makes camp. In the dark he looks for a wrench in his saddlebag. Not finding it, frustrated, he searches for the flashlight in the bag. Not finding it, he dumps the bag out on the ground and searches through the pile for the flashlight... — PolitiTweet.org

@Ronmain3 Exactly! You win the prize. Just the answer I was looking for. I am reminded of a story from "Zen & The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance". Permit me to elaborate in a series of tweets. — PolitiTweet.org

@Poetonpoetry Yes, I misspoke. They were not at all indentured back in the 1600s. The king in the next century. They were slaves. The English cleared Ireland. — PolitiTweet.org
