Personally, I feel like maintaining OSS *could* be one of the most fulfilling and impactful career paths. Too bad it’s not (currently) tenable. — PolitiTweet.org

With just these two timestamps, we could confidently say the dates were spoofed. And there's nothing special about what we did here. All we had to do was click "inspect element" to find this metadata. But even simple techniques (like this one) can be incredibly revealing. 6/ — PolitiTweet.org

They posted the page at 2:19 pm on Oct 2. Then, they manually set the date back to Sep 27 — but they didn't bother to change the hour/minute fields. (Or they just didn't notice.) Then, they pasted the activists' tweet into the post, and clicked "save" two minutes later. 5/ — PolitiTweet.org

On one page, the publication date was 2:19 pm on Sep 27. The last updated date was 2:21 pm on Oct 2. Invisible <time> tags in the page source gave us this minute-level resolution (see screenshot below). Why are the times so similar? Here's what we think happened... 4/ https://t.co/lYHHCXvOEo — PolitiTweet.org

The answer: page metadata. Although they spoofed the pages' publication dates, they didn't realize that their WordPress site also embedded the *last update time* in the source of each page. When we compared the published v. updated timestamps, their scheme became clear. 3/ — PolitiTweet.org
R. Miles McCain and 309 others @MilesMcCain
Then, they submitted a DMCA copyright complaint to Twitter. Since it looked like their spoofed version came first, Twitter took down the tweets. Shelby's thread describes this takedown in much more detail. Here, I just want to highlight *how* we discovered the date spoofing. 2/ — PolitiTweet.org

New takedown from @StanfordIO! A pro-Tanzanian government network abused DMCA complaints in an attempt to silence critics and activists on Twitter. How? They copied the critics' tweets, posted them on a WordPress site, then spoofed the publication date to predate the tweet. 1/ — PolitiTweet.org
