The answer: page metadata. Although they spoofed the pages' publication dates, they didn't realize that their WordPress site also embedded the *last update time* in the source of each page. When we compared the published v. updated timestamps, their scheme became clear. 3/ — PolitiTweet.org

On one page, the publication date was 2:19 pm on Sep 27. The last updated date was 2:21 pm on Oct 2.
