@DKThomp English is actually a more severe example of this — “thou” used to be second person singular and “you” was plural. Then “you” also became the formal form of address (like “vous”) and eventually it crowded out “thou” entirely so we had to invent “y’all” as a plural form. — PolitiTweet.org
