@X_Cli_Public @__dotblake They probably forwarded the TLS connection to the Signal server when domain fronting, so Google App Engine would see the encrypted traffic that anyone spying on a phone's internet could see without domain fronting. There's no reason to do anything else — PolitiTweet.org

Apple didn't say if they handed over Edwards iMessage metadata. But they do retain this metadata for 30 days, and hand it to the FBI when ordered. However the iMessage metadata, in the form of "capability query logs," "do not indicate" that a message was actually sent https://t.co/ndYYdur9PZ — PolitiTweet.org

WhatsApp didn't comment, but they routinely comply with pen register/trap and trace orders. In the last half of 2018, Facebook got 4904 pen register requests and responded with "some data" to 92% of them. So, good to know: Facebook gives the FBI WhatsApp metadata when ordered https://t.co/MlopCC5A0j — PolitiTweet.org

Signal has confirmed they did not provide the metadata. All of the government requests they've ever responded to are listed here https://t.co/TvBrsOs6zS (it's just one, and Signal provided basically no information) https://t.co/AuNMCjZ49a — PolitiTweet.org

But you can't see metadata from popular encrypted messaging apps just by spying on internet traffic. These apps encrypt communication to the server, so only the service itself can see who messages are sent to. So most likely, a messaging app complied with a court order — PolitiTweet.org

Pen register and trap and trace orders allow the government to collect metadata from a phone, but doesn't define exactly how they get the metadata. It could be spying on the phone's internet, eavesdropping with a stingray, or ordering the service provider to hand it over — PolitiTweet.org

During the investigation, the FBI got a "judicially-authorized pen register and trap and trace order" for her personal phone. Using this, they started receiving real-time metadata for an encryption messaging app -- but they don't name which app https://t.co/CBUckr1rEu — PolitiTweet.org
