Both essays are extraordinary testaments both to the trauma that Moscow has historically inflicted on its own citizens as well as those in neighboring countries—and to the kind of talent it continues to lose by driving these incredible people out. 💔 — PolitiTweet.org

The second is by the other-worldly Mark Preston, the name he took when he got asylum in the U.S. In describing the trauma of surviving the wars in Chechnya, he correctly and poignantly calls out the double standards in both Russia and the West. https://t.co/T2exYP1o9D https://t.co/XHlXvEeaDJ — PolitiTweet.org

This week, they both published extraordinarily moving pieces about the experience. The first is by the incredible @GroznyMazay, about what it feels like to villainized as a Russian when your whole childhood was marked by being the enemy of the Russians. https://t.co/9JtPzRCOgK https://t.co/3YlSNS4zLI — PolitiTweet.org

Two of my very close friends are Chechens who survived both Chechen wars. I've heard their stories, I've seen the tiny, dank cellar where one of them slept for months to avoid the artillery strikes, and have seen how they have struggled watching the war in Ukraine unfold. 1/ — PolitiTweet.org

Julia Ioffe @juliaioffe
@JasminMuj But yes, I agree with you. I once got in trouble for saying that it was not Putin ruling over an unwilling Russia, but that Russia was a land of around 100 million little Putins, if not more. Later, the Russian opposition began to speak of "the collective Putin." A good term. — PolitiTweet.org
Julia Ioffe @juliaioffe
@JasminMuj Base of support, yes. Even Moscow, the city that hates Putin the most, seems evenly split on the war. — PolitiTweet.org
Julia Ioffe @juliaioffe
This reminds me of Svetlana Alexievich's "Zinky Boys." She wrote about the young Soviet soldiers in Afghanistan who didn't know why they were there. And then their mothers sued Alexievich—because they needed to believe their sons didn't die in vain. https://t.co/OQAlzZLsxM — PolitiTweet.org
Julia Ioffe @juliaioffe
@JasminMuj I don't know that he has a constituency, in that no one is asking their permission of consent. He has a group that supports him and he would like to keep their support so that he can do whatever he wants. It's weird to talk about "constituencies" in an authoritarian state. — PolitiTweet.org

Not everyone sees the world as we do, not everyone is immune to a powerful propaganda machine that's grown ever more powerful over two decades, not everyone reacts to death and loss in the ways we would expect. Let's be careful not to confuse our wishes for reality. — PolitiTweet.org
Julia Ioffe @juliaioffe
"I hate them all," the mother of a dead Russian soldier says of Ukrainians. "I have no pity even for the civilians." The war was necessary—"we had no choice"—because "if we didn't bomb them, they would've bombed us." "My son fought for us, for Russia...he didn't die in vain." — PolitiTweet.org

Julia Ioffe @juliaioffe
People in the West keep hoping for the mothers of Russian soldiers to speak up against the war—and some have. But some mothers, even those whose sons have died in the war, are vehemently pro war—and vocally against even Ukrainian civilians. https://t.co/MGoYtEisV6 — PolitiTweet.org
