@TheGadgetist_ro I didn’t have to retire. No one made me do it, or even suggested it. I loved my job and was treated well by my bosses and colleagues. 50 years ago today, I watched the first moon landing on a small TV on a small boat off the coast of Massachusetts, not far from where the Mayflower landed. The U.S. had many problems, but seeing humans walking on another celestial body, in real time, was amazing and profound. https://t.co/Kv3jZqSkpe — PolitiTweet.org

Neil Armstrong, the first human to walk on the moon, is often described as taciturn to the extreme. And he did indeed shun the spotlight as soon as he could and for most of his life. But this short interview clip shows him in a genial, talkative mood. https://t.co/v6LITqNntW — PolitiTweet.org

@patricknward @JoannaStern .@JoannaStern is unique, and uniquely talented. Here’s my comparable review, from 2010, of the first *4G* phone in the U.S., with tests conducted in the city (Baltimore) where the new network was best. @olsentropy Like I said, I admire his lede and have for years. But it occurs to me now, that "humans" would have been even better -- not for political correctness, but because it's more sweeping, just as accurate, and reads better (at least to me) from the vantage point of history. — PolitiTweet.org

@bradleege The Luna 15 mission was actually widely known to the American public at the time. It was covered on TV and in the newspapers, mainly because of the fear it would somehow interfere with Apollo communications or operations. (The Soviets assured NASA otherwise.) It’s forgotten now. https://t.co/LLCQKXq0ZO — PolitiTweet.org
Walt Mossberg @waltmossberg
The demise of the Soviet manned lunar landing program in the 1960’s was mostly due to the repeated launch failures of its giant N1 rocket, which had 30 engines. It was the rough equivalent of the huge U.S. Saturn 5 rocket and was needed to carry the cosmonauts’ ship and lander. — PolitiTweet.org
Walt Mossberg @waltmossberg
The US-Soviet race to the moon came down to the last days. Having failed to land men on the moon, the Soviets sent a robotic lander, the Luna 15, to collect lunar soil and return it to earth. Incredibly, it was trying to land exactly when Apollo 11 was there. But it crashed. https://t.co/kTDjCh3j75 — PolitiTweet.org

I have long admired the simplicity & clarity of this famous page-one lead in the @nytimes on July 21, 1969: “Men have landed and walked on the moon.” It’s accurate, but would stand up so much better after 50 years, IMO, if it had said “Humans have landed and walked on the moon.” https://t.co/UJLGNCce2V — PolitiTweet.org
