3 additional Russian sailors who were killed on/near Snake Island. Senior Sailor Dmitry Ostrovsky and Sailor Nikita Maksimenko likely served with the Black Sea Fleet's 388th Naval Reconnaissance Point (OMRP). @HN_Schlottman @DI_Ukraine @dupuyinstitute The thing I would point out is that I think the 1st Tank Army likely had more cases of soldiers surrendering and abandoning vehicles than other units, so that could affect the ratios. They also invaded with more conscripts than other Russian units. — PolitiTweet.org

Keep in mind that some BTGs only had 400 personnel and that was before attrition. I don't think the BTG figure is particularly helpful for assessing Russian ground combat power at this point. 2532/ https://t.co/Enx13mLH3N — PolitiTweet.org

@AVSIllini @br4s1d4s @KofmanMichael Yep, the brunt of the casualties were in maneuver units, particularly naval infantry, VDV, and spetsnaz. So Russia can't rely on them as heavily for the current offensive, and are instead throwing mobilized DNR/LNR guys into the fight with predictable results. — PolitiTweet.org

As an example, Russia's 1st Tank Army reportedly lost 308 vehicles by mid-March but only sustained 61 KIA (possibly higher with the MIA figure), which is a pretty low figure. Though more vehicles were abandoned at the beginning of the war than later on. https://t.co/bxdzJiRaVT — PolitiTweet.org

One reason for the difference in casualty estimates has to do with how you count a destroyed Russian BTR or BMP. If you count each as full, you'll have a higher estimate, but we know that many BMP/BTR only had 3-4 personnel and many were destroyed after they were abandoned. — PolitiTweet.org

But continuing the offensive in the Donbas at this rate means this operation will become unsustainable faster than if Russia decided to dig in and defend the territory it currently holds. Domestic political considerations seem to be driving Russia's behavior. 3/ — PolitiTweet.org

Putin clearly realizes that mobilization or de-escalation would be very unpopular (the 2nd would mean admitting it won't achieve its objectives), and that Russia can continue the current operation without much domestic blowback for the time being. But it can't do this forever. 2/ — PolitiTweet.org
Rob Lee @RALee85
It feels like Russia's leadership is engaged in strategic procrastination. Its current efforts won't achieve strategic gains, so they could escalate or de-escalate, but they realize the downsides of both. However, Russia's current operation isn't sustainable without a change. — PolitiTweet.org
