.@Athersmike is right that the schedule & structure of 1st class cricket is a joke at the moment. If we can't have many county championship games in June/July/August, shd at least have regional teams of potential Test cricketers playing red ball cricket. https://t.co/Gmvk7UFTds — PolitiTweet.org

@callummay Yes I can see the danger for county cricket. My worry is the risks for English first class cricket as a whole. — PolitiTweet.org

@MATruman @GilesMooney Not entirely solved, true. But players like Anderson, Broad, Robinson, Leach, Burns, Sibley, Hameed, Lawrence could get more proper cricket. And even some multi-format players might choose 1st class cricket if prioritising their Test performances. — PolitiTweet.org
David Gauke @DavidGauke
@MATruman @GilesMooney The Hundred creates the opportunity - leaves lots of county players without any competitive cricket & only uses 8 grounds. Select the Test specialists + fringe & aspiring Test cricketers, play on under-used county grounds. Good experience/preparation (& some of us would watch.) — PolitiTweet.org

If it's unrealistic to play the county championship over mid-summer, shouldn't we find an alternative plan for playing first class cricket in June & July? Test trials? North/Midlands/West/South East teams selecting Test/potential Test players? https://t.co/uOxSx7jsp2 — PolitiTweet.org

The policy challenge is to address two different cases of unfairness. It's unfair for families to lose so much because someone gets dementia. It's also unfair to prioritise taxpayers' money to protect the asset-rich who've done well in recent years. IMO this is better than a cap. — PolitiTweet.org
David Gauke @DavidGauke
Here's a link to Peter Lilley's paper for Civitas setting out how a publicly owned body could offer an insurance product for social care costs. I'd combine it with a tax-funded increased floor which would provide certainty for poorer pensioners. https://t.co/onVhDl2aIM — PolitiTweet.org

David Gauke @DavidGauke
@JohnSpringford @ProfTimBale @anandMenon1 I’d increase the floor (which would protect poorer pensioners). The Lilley plan also makes the premium proportionate to the value of the property. — PolitiTweet.org
David Gauke @DavidGauke
@JohnSpringford @ProfTimBale @anandMenon1 If you have to decide at 65-67, the adverse selection problem should be manageable (although that might change if we get much better at early diagnosis). — PolitiTweet.org
David Gauke @DavidGauke
@7nestingwrens @ProfTimBale The Lilley plan involves the premium varying depending on the value of the property. And if the taxpayer funds a higher floor, poorer pensions won’t need to take out a premium. — PolitiTweet.org
David Gauke @DavidGauke
@anandMenon1 @ProfTimBale One of the difficulties is conflicting senses of fairness. It’s unfair for someone to lose most of their assets because of dementia. But spending billions on a cap benefits most those who’ve gained from property price inflation - and that doesn’t seem fair, either. — PolitiTweet.org

@ProfTimBale Thanks, Tim. And sorry to read of your family’s circumstances. You’re right that one reason social care is hard to reform is that people don’t think the current system will work against them (often, I suspect, because they don’t know how the current system works). — PolitiTweet.org

Reforming social care is hard but the Government’s reported solution doesn’t ask enough of the wealthy pensioners who will benefit most. And there’s a way to do it that avoids the perils of the ‘dementia tax’. Me for @NewStatesman. https://t.co/IZlNu5uet8 — PolitiTweet.org
