7 Sept - PM sets 15 Oct deadline for talks 9 Sept - introduction of the IMB 14 Sept - votes on the IMB 16 Oct - PM says time to get ready for no deal. Each time there’s been an escalation in tension with EU, the Conservative Party has put out a fundraising appeal to its members. — PolitiTweet.org

By the way, the UK Government is quite right to seek a deal that is much more advanced than the EU-Canada deal. The EU is a much more important trading partner to us than it is to Canada. But with additional rights come additional obligations. Not yet too late to recognise that. — PolitiTweet.org

The UK has been seeking a much more ambitious deal with EU than the EU-Canada deal. Canada has very limited agricultural deal with high tariffs. No road haulage or electricity & gas. A more limited aviation deal, nothing comparable on data, not much on justice & home affairs etc. — PolitiTweet.org

And Australia - which does far less trade than we do with the EU because geography still matters - is trying to negotiate an FTA with the EU because the patchwork of agreements they currently have (which we won't in January if we don't get a deal) is unsatisfactory. — PolitiTweet.org

When the Government says that it sought a Canada-style deal but will be content with an Australia-style deal, worth remembering that it sought a much closer relationship with the EU than Canada has and - without a deal - will have a less advanced relationship than Australia has. — PolitiTweet.org

Always thought that the chance of no deal was under-estimated but it's premature to think that talks have come to an end. Even so, it is striking how many Brexiteers think that they have & that this is something to welcome. If it comes to it, worth remembering in January. — PolitiTweet.org

Very good point by @PJTheEconomist. For many businesses, Tier 2 is worse than Tier 3. (Tier 2 is also less effective in slowing the spread of the virus.) So in terms of the row over Manchester being moved into Tier 3 'the argument is over exactly the wrong thing.' — PolitiTweet.org

To get a deal (even a thin, inadequate one that will diminish economic growth for years ahead), the PM is going to have to move further on state aid & governance. It’d be reckless for him not to do so but he’s running out of time. The sabre-rattling isn’t working. — PolitiTweet.org

‘If we can’t agree by [15 October], then I do not see that there will be a free trade agreement between us, and we should both accept that and move on,’ said Boris Johnson on 7 September. The last thing a fragile economy needs. — PolitiTweet.org

@PippaCrerar You may well be right. But it looks pretty obvious that Tier 2 restrictions in Greater Manchester are inadequate. — PolitiTweet.org

@PippaCrerar I hope that’s right & it’s reasonable to fight your corner for more money. But I think it’s important that the principle that different restrictions apply depending upon local conditions is accepted. If not, it’s going to be even harder to get through this. — PolitiTweet.org

I accept point that local politicians entitled to argue case for compensation for businesses & people affected by local restrictions, but that is separate from the principle that - on a localised basis - the higher the rate of infections the tighter should be the restrictions. — PolitiTweet.org
