This Compact piece is a good example of the former https://t.co/qLoNYOWZve It's silly to compare EU courts, whatever their flaws, to Budapest's rubber stamps. Isolated assaults on journalists in other EU countries is not comparable to systemic muzzling of media in Hungary. https://t.co/vaunwxyc8F — PolitiTweet.org

@sckimbriel @wtfis2bdone i will say, for my part, i was getting a million responses and it was hard to keep track of them. and it's especially hard to divine what's a good faith engagement in that context, let alone clarify nuances of disagreement — PolitiTweet.org

One thing I've noticed in conservative defenses of Hungary is that they typically don't rebut the evidence that it's authoritarian. They respond either with whataboutism — democracy isn't perfect here, either! — or by simply repeating the accusations sarcastically. — PolitiTweet.org

Plenty to criticize when it comes to Locke on slavery, but this is false. The Two Treatises do not contain a defense of chattel slavery as practiced in America, much less at their “core” https://t.co/LpDg21Vnxp I would ignore this, but the arrogance is jarring. — PolitiTweet.org

@OlufemiOTaiwo @jbouie @sckimbriel @lastpositivist It's funny, I basically agree with Jamelle's point about entanglement and don't see it as being at all inconsistent with my view — which is really about whether liberalism was also an important part of the solution (which imo it's actual revisionism to deny). — PolitiTweet.org

@OlufemiOTaiwo @jbouie @sckimbriel @lastpositivist This is more than a little bit of a straw man! I never said "weightier," nor does my argument depend on that. And plausibility cuts both ways — I find it extremely implausible to argue that the world became much better as liberalism spread and that the two are unconnected. — PolitiTweet.org

@OlufemiOTaiwo @jbouie @sckimbriel @lastpositivist I think it does considerable harm to discount the role of liberal ideas and institutions in creating a more just world, especially given that the alternatives to liberalism have proven so disastrous. Now we're dueling tag lines, like I said happy to discuss more deeply elsewhere. — PolitiTweet.org

@jbouie @OlufemiOTaiwo @sckimbriel @lastpositivist Of course not – Femi made a similar point in a separate part of the thread — but it created the conditions under which those campaigns could be successful. I also plead guilty to the charge of non-materialism you leveled, I really do believe in the independent power of ideas. — PolitiTweet.org

@OlufemiOTaiwo @jbouie @sckimbriel @lastpositivist Trying to create a more equitable global system and prevent another world war, including by enshrining the principle of national self-determination into international law? And it (kind of) worked? — PolitiTweet.org

@jbouie @OlufemiOTaiwo @sckimbriel @lastpositivist I think it does no good — in fact, does considerable harm — to claim that liberalism did not play an essential role in the defeat of said hierarchies! That's what I'm really objecting to here. — PolitiTweet.org

@jbouie @OlufemiOTaiwo @sckimbriel @lastpositivist I'm not sure where that gets you? The spread of liberal ideals, in part, was responsible for said catastrophic events (e.g., abolitionism was liberal). And post-WWII, the victor liberal states —mostly the US — chose to inaugurate a liberal world order for, well, liberal reasons. — PolitiTweet.org
