@crashfrog @mattyglesias Translating the Spanish or German phrase for "low tire pressure" to English seems easier than looking up some icon in a foreign language user manual. — PolitiTweet.org

Question about rail in California that I can't ever recall seeing explained: what are the obstacles to making the existing train lines higher speed? — PolitiTweet.org

@mattyglesias It seems like by now they would just have a screen that said the thing that was wrong in plain language––e.g. "low tire pressure"––instead of (say) an exclamation mark icon. — PolitiTweet.org

@HCheadle I think quoting in a responsibly written article would be better because it would be less likely to spread virally in ways the original publisher doesn't intend. Better to have fewer incendiary anti-semitic rants shared around, yes? — PolitiTweet.org

@Schwartzesque I see that, and can also think of factors cutting in the other direction. I'm also trying to disentangle this in my own head from my larger sense that our information economy assigns too much mindshare and importance to *stupid/incendiary thing celebrity says* — PolitiTweet.org

@yeah_good_okay @ivysorta @steinkobbe Calm down. We do not disagree about Carlson's odiousness. I invite you to read up on my general opinion of him. For example: https://t.co/839s7MsTAN — PolitiTweet.org

@JHWeissmann @mattyglesias We agree on the value of reporting on the footage and what it reveals. We seem to have different instincts on the distinct question of whether, in addition, the footage should be published, as opposed to described and even transcribed. — PolitiTweet.org

With all the talk about the new @RichardvReeves book and its statistical evidence about struggling boys and men, I asked Atlantic readers to offer their thoughts on what's gone wrong. Very interesting responses from hugely varied perspectives: https://t.co/vV1X6YjX0f — PolitiTweet.org

@Schwartzesque Oh man, you have really depressed me with that thought. FWIW, I agree with the case for *reporting on the video*, even with transcribed portions, I just doubt the value ad of publishing it outweighs the downsides. — PolitiTweet.org

@Schwartzesque In this case, I grant the news value of documenting Carlson's bad behavior. Would you grant the value of a countervailing norm against publishing authentic footage of people in seeming mental crisis, absent a strong countervailing public good? — PolitiTweet.org

@trizzlor @jduffyrice So long as the writer noted the context was *very confused seeming person, not lucid person* I would prefer the transcript to the video, but reasonable people can disagree on this — PolitiTweet.org

@trizzlor @jduffyrice Interesting. So if it was you in the video, and you could choose between an outlet publishing the footage, or describing it as *subject appears very confused, and says x,y, and z*, you'd prefer that the video be published? — PolitiTweet.org

@JHWeissmann @mattyglesias Of course. To be clear, I agree the segment was a bad idea, even more so than most of his segments, which is saying something. — PolitiTweet.org

@jduffyrice I see 2 downsides to the vid: if a subject is having a manic episode I don't think they can consent to interview; & the content is incendiary nonsense. Insofar as a transcript is less likely to spread virally beyond responsible treatment in an article, it arguably mitigates both — PolitiTweet.org

@BryanD600 My stance on Carlson is that he should not have aired the interview at all, because it is irresponsible for broadcasters to air interviews with people who appear to be having manic episodes. — PolitiTweet.org

@jduffyrice I agree that we should let the public know that. What I doubt is whether publishing the video, as opposed to reporting on it, was necessary to that enterprise. Do you think a description with illustrative quotes from a transcript would have done the job or only seeing it could? — PolitiTweet.org

@DavidRotherton Who is this undifferentiated they? Also, the vaccine for this disease *was successful*! People who got it died in far smaller numbers than people who didn't. It just wasn't as successful against infection as it first appeared it would be. — PolitiTweet.org

@mffwww I get that concern, and as noted elsewhere, I'm coming around to the position *excerpts of transcribed text but no video release* might be the sweet spot. Would that alleviate your concern or no? — PolitiTweet.org

Some of this is the old *context one's followers have* versus *context randos coming to the conversation* have. My longtime readers know me as writer of scores of critiques of Carlson/Fox News/populist right. Many randos presume a motive of praising them or eliding their flaws. — PolitiTweet.org
