As an interested outsider, I find the coding of "hawks" and "doves" in the China debate very reminiscent of a similar moment among Soviet scholars after Brezhnev invaded Afghanistan in 1979. My own view is that our coding exercise back then did not help scholarship or policy. — PolitiTweet.org

It also impacted me personally. I was coded as a "hawk" by some of the important scholars in my field. That was not pleasant. It was also wrong. I hope the China field will avoid our past mistakes. BTW, the Russia academic field today has very little of those polarizing divides. — PolitiTweet.org
