It isn't clear exactly when Russia set up an overall commander for the operation. It was previously reported that Southern Military District (YuVO) CO Alexander Dvornikov was the overall CO, but it wasn't clear if this was a separate command or if YuVO was just the main effort.8/ — PolitiTweet.org

Surovikin is the commander of the Southern grouping but it isn't 100% clear if this means he is now the Southern Military District commander as well (replacing Dvornikov who appears to no longer have a role in Ukraine). He is/was the commander of Russia's Aerospace Forces. 10/ — PolitiTweet.org
