He actually wrote the song on Christmas Day of 1863. He'd recently lost his wife & his son had been severely wounded in the Civil War. As he heard the bells in the distance, he wrote the beautiful poem. We don’t sing this verse very much but I believe it is particularly powerful. — PolitiTweet.org
