It’s been awhile since I freelanced. About 15 years ago I was an editor at the @monthly. We couldn’t pay anyone anything, including the editors. The whole operation was cross-subsidized by think tanks and better-paying magazines (and foundation grants, and, probably, parents). — PolitiTweet.org

My guess is that the economics of different publications vary pretty widely, and thus pay does too, making this discussion a little blurry. It’s also hard to quantify the value of a writer’s time and work by word length. — PolitiTweet.org
