there is some precedent to this twitter and instagram wouldn’t let folks bootstrap off each others friend graphs for a long time (maybe still?) and Facebook would chop API access to any startup they felt a growing threat building off the graph (it wasn’t this explicit, though) — PolitiTweet.org
