@SenatorZero Yikes. I had already found an August 1988 poll giving Dukakis a 17-point lead. Serves me right for guessing rather than checking. Both 1988 and 2016 were non-incumbent elections so that the electorate was more volatile since they didn't have rigid opinions about an incumbent. — PolitiTweet.org

@jamesabloom Still, I shouldn't have jumped so quickly. Also, I now see from my responses on Twitter that Hillary had a similar lead in the summer of 2016. The difference from 1988 and 2016, of course, is that there was no incumbent on the ballot so voter preferences were more volatile. — PolitiTweet.org
