A big part of me wants my kids to do that at 18 or 20, but part of me wants them to go live abroad or elsewhere to gain independence: their choice. Speaking for myself and my peers at the time, the ability to move out and live from a distance was a means of gaining independence and making one's own way -- not a desire to avoid shame or stigma.
