so interesting — my mom has a similar superstition from way back, which has to do with gifting knives. she says giving someone a knife invites bad luck into the relationship, so a knife can only be 'borrowed' — she gifts knives with a penny, which you have to say you'll pay back! — PolitiTweet.org
