yeah i think a major saving grace for me was that my high school had about ~4,000 kids in it. it was bigger than my university. it functioned like a small town. you knew people in your small group of friends/associates, but never even interacted w other groups of kids — PolitiTweet.org

so while there technically wasn't tracking, there was de-facto tracking. if you were in solid APs, did academic decathlon, AQL, UIL, etc (and/or debate, as it were), the teachers knew who you were and mostly they just left us alone. they had so many other things to deal with lol — PolitiTweet.org
